To Tell or Not to Tell?

Something we discuss often at WAGC meetings is whether or not to tell your child’s teacher that your child is (or may be) gifted. I always say “yes”. If my “yes” ever goes unchallenged, things will have changed for the better.

We are not the only people wondering about this. As America goes back to school, lots of parents there are asking themselves this same question. Carol Bainbridge lists some factors to consider. Well worth a read.

In New Zealand some schools have a GATE teacher, and all schools have a SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator). If you sense that discussing your child’s abilities with the classroom teacher may become uncomfortable, one of these teachers, or the principal, may be a useful person to approach.
